The Center for Ethical Business Cultures announces the appointment of James A. Mitchell as Executive Business Fellow with responsibility for Leadership. Formerly the Minnesota Center for Corporate Responsibility, the Center assists business leaders in developing ethical and profitable business cultures at the enterprise, community and global levels. Ethical leadership, management and cultures is one of three core areas in which the Center works in its strategic partnership with the business community, the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Business and the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. Mitchell will assist the Center in developing research and programming focused on "leading with integrity," leadership that orients organizations toward an ethical business culture and increases their effectiveness. His research initiative, the Ethical Value Project, will seek to demonstrate empirically that "ethical leadership is good business." Mitchell and his Center colleagues also plan to develop an original model of the ethical value chain, and to identify and demonstrate practical ways to change behavior in a firm so that ethical value can be added optimally. In a related initiative, the Center will also sponsor a series of CEO Forums. These forums will provide an opportunity for CEOs to reflect with peers on substantive issues to determine how they can be more intentional about leading their organizations toward an ethical business culture and with increasing effectiveness. James A. Mitchell joins the Center after serving as Executive Vice President of Marketing and Products for American Express, where he was responsible for $180 billion in assets and $750 million in net income. He remains Chairman of the Board of IDS Life Insurance Company, the nations 14th largest life insurance company. During his tenure as President and CEO, IDS Life Insurance became the fastest-growing and most profitable large life insurance company in the United States. A graduate of Princeton University, Mitchell is a Chartered Financial Consultant, a Chartered Life Underwriter and a Fellow, Society of Actuaries. Mitchell is Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of The American College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and a member of its Executive Committee. He serves on the Boards of both for profit businesses and non-profit organizations, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Hamline University, the YMCA of Greater Minneapolis, Capella Education Company, Interelate, Inc., KLT Inc. and PrivateAccounts.com. |
