CSR History Consultation

On November 6-7, CEBC hosted a consultation among scholars to create a framework for the History of Corporate Social Responsibility from 1945 to the present. The Center gathered a remarkable group of 14 scholars and practitioners drawn from business ethics, management, business history, companies and consultancies. Kenneth Goodpaster, Koch Chair in Business Ethics in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas, facilitated the discussion.

  • Core Economic and Social Impact

  • Changing Social, Political and Economic Environment

  • Evolving Concepts and Definitions of CSR

  • Development of CSR Business Strategies and Practices

  • Emerging CSR Issues

The concept of doing a history of corporate social responsibility was first advanced by Harry Halloran, Chairman and CEO of American Refinery Group (ARG) based in Pennsylvania. The Center’s initial work on the project included conducting a literature search, a preliminary concept paper, and searching for scholars who might be engaged in the project. Mr. Halloran has also been instrumental in the creation of the SAIP Institute at St. Thomas. The consultation is being funded by the Halloran Foundation.
