James A. Mitchell
Executive Business Fellow, Leadership
Center for Ethical Business Cultures

James A. Mitchell focuses on helping people lead with integrity. For the past four years, he has been Executive Fellow - Leadership at the Center for Ethical Business Cultures. The Center is affiliated with the University of St. Thomas College of Business, assisting business leaders in building ethical and profitable cultures.  His paper, The Ethical Advantage:  Why Ethical Leadership is Good Business, was recently published by the Center, and his findings have been reported in several publications, including Corporate Board Member, Minnesota Business and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Mr. Mitchell and his wife Linda founded the Mitchell Center for Ethical Leadership in Financial Services at The American College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The Center sponsors an annual forum where leading CEOs in the financial services industry meet with top academic ethicists to discuss issues in ethical leadership. In 1999 The American College awarded Mr. Mitchell the Huebner Gold Medal, its highest award, in recognition of his dedication to education and professionalism in financial services.

Mr. Mitchell retired in 1999 as Executive Vice President of Marketing and Products for American Express Company, with responsibility for $180 billion in mutual fund, annuity and insurance assets and $750 million in net income. He served on the Board of Directors of the IDS Mutual Fund Group and also was Chairman, President and CEO of IDS Life, the nation’s 14th largest life insurance company. During his tenure, IDS Life became the fastest-growing and most profitable large life insurance company in the United States. Over this nine-year period, net income grew at a compound annual rate of 23%, and ROE improved to 21% (after tax).

Prior to joining American Express in 1984, Mr. Mitchell was employed by CIGNA Corp., (Connecticut General Life), most recently as President of the Reinsurance Division.

A 1963 graduate of Princeton University, he is a Chartered Financial Consultant, a Chartered Life Underwriter and a Fellow, Society of Actuaries.

Mr. Mitchell currently serves on the Boards of Capella Education Company and Great Plains Energy, Inc., and chairs the Board of The American College Endowment Foundation. His past directorships include membership on the Executive Committees of The American College, where he was Board Chair, the American Council of Life Insurance, Hamline University, the Hartford Stage Company, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the YMCA of Metropolitan Minneapolis.

The Mitchells reside in Longboat Key, FL and Minneapolis, MN. They have three adult children and one beautiful granddaughter.
