December 1996

Happy Holidays from MCCR!!!!

MCCR Gives Award to TSI, Inc: On behalf of MCCR's Families That Work! program, Bob MacGregor and program director Patti Schneider presented TSI's CEO Leroy "Mike" Fingerson and Camay Blakely, director of training and development with an award for the Human Resource Department's Training and Development Group in recognition for outstanding support of Family Education programs for the benefit of employees, their families and our communities.

FamiliesSchoolsWork: The Work«Life Network meeting for January 15 will focus on linking families and schools to strengthen learning. In particular, what can business do? We are assisting Dr. Marti Erickson of the University of Minnesota's Children, Youth & Family Consortium as she plans Vice President Gore's national Family Reunion Conference on Families and Schools. Last June, the Gore event focused on Work and Family. We need your help to identify contacts and models. To participate or simply share information please call 962-4120.

Parachute Journalism in China: Pioneer Press business reporter Dave Beal and Liang Jizong, visiting Chinese scholar, spoke to 50 MCCR members and guests December 10 on what Beal calls the "Puzzling People's Republic" and the challenge of practicing Minnesota business values in China. The issues facing China are formidable. Beal and Jizong agreed that stability is China's high priority. Both noted that for China human rights means feeding, sheltering, and finding jobs for the country's 1.2 billion people. Professor Jizong spoke with pride of his country's history and encouraged the MCCR audience to have confidence in the Chinese people. Beal urged MCCR to create opportunities for Minnesota businesses to compare notes about doing business in China. President Bob MacGregor reported that 5,000 copies of the Principles for Business have been distributed in Hong Kong and South China. MCCR thanks H.B. Fuller for hosting this event and the Minnesota Trade Office for its assistance.

Phase One Completed: MCCR's Roundtable on Aligning Values and Actions - Beyond the Bottom Line wrapped up its fourth successful session December 5. Twenty managers from twelve companies have shared ideas and compared notes on their struggles to organize around core values. How are values developed and communicated? How do you deal with value conflicts? Facilitators Chuck Kingsley and Carol Pine are working with MCCR to define a 1997 program series. Stay tuned!

For additional information on MCCR's programming, contact Bob MacGregor, MCCR's President, or David Rodbourne at #962-4120.

The Work«Life Network: Forty-five managers participated in The Work«Life Network meeting organized by MCCR on December 4. Norwest's Molly Van Metre reviewed implementation of its flexible scheduling process called Norwest L.I.F.E. IBM's Peggy Marchesani described its decision-making process for extending benefits to cover domestic partners of employees. NSP's Mike Chapin described the merger process and building a new organizational culture for NSP and Wisconsin Electric and how both firms commit to diversity and work/life. American Express Financial Advisors' Sharon Klun and Medtronic's Beverly Mills-Novoa reported on internal analyses of the costs and benefits of sick child care. Both firms concluded that bottom line benefits outweighed costs by a substantial margin.

Stakeholders Concept Set in Concrete: Welcoming guests to MCCR's China program, H.B. Fuller Board Chair Tony Andersen pointed out the four words set boldly in stone on the wall of the conference room at Fuller's new World Headquarters: Customers - Employees - Shareholders - Communities. This commitment to serving multiple stakeholders made MCCR members feel right at home and is one reason we appreciate H.B. Fuller's support of the Center.

Redefining Diversity - Ninth Annual Multicultural Forum: MCCR is a sponsor for Redefining Diversity to be held March 6, 1997 at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center. The all-day forum culminates with Dr. Roosevelt Thomas, author of Redefining Diversity. Dr. Thomas addressed MCCR members last June. Steve Sanger, Chairman and CEO of General Mills, will keynote the morning session. The Forum is hosted by the University of St. Thomas and the National Black MBA Association, Twin Cities Chapter. For information, call Sue Moyer at 962-4255.

Executive Management Committee: Clint Larson, chair, and Patti Hague from Health Partners, presented a committee report on The Future of MCCR to the Board of Directors at the December 4 board meeting. The report was extremely well-received by board members. The committee will continue to work through several options that are under consideration with the objective of strengthen service to members.

Welcome Returning and New Members: MCCR welcomes EcoLab, Grand Casinos, MagneTek, KPMG Peat Marwick, Spanlink Communications, and Upper Midwest Industries.
