July 1998

America’s Most Generous Companies: American Benefactor magazine lauded three Minnesota corporations as among the Top 25 in the U.S. for their leadership in corporate philanthropy. Honeywell was cited for its leadership in Minnesota HEALS (Hope, Education, And Law and Safety) anti-crime collaboration. The St. Paul Companies was identified both for its commitment to "Advancing the Non-Profit, Voluntary Sector" and its leadership initiatives in neighborhoods programs. Dayton Hudson was cited for its 50+ year commitment to giving 5% pretax and several Target grants. Interesting facts: corporate sources account for less than 6% of contributions nationally; on average companies give only 1.3% of pretax earnings to charity. Of the 25 companies, the writer says "what really distinguishes them is a vision of their role in society based on civic values – chief among which is the value called generosity."

TSI School Partnerships a Success: Over the past two years, MCCR’s Families That Work! project, directed by Patty Schneider, has worked with member company TSI, Inc. to create joint projects with Valentine Hills Elementary School and Irondale High School. These projects, funded by TSI, demonstrate the company’s commitment to enrich both the workplace and children’s education. This year:

  • New this year - TSI sponsored the Irondale High marketing competition. Students developed new uses and marketing concepts for environmental testing products. Three teams met the challenge. Competition winners earned $100.

  • The company hosted the 2nd Annual Valentine Hills Fifth Grade Science Fair.

  • Also for the 2nd year, TSI exhibited art from the Kindergarten class through the Fifth grade.

  • Mounds View High string quartet played classical Christmas music at the TSI Support Services party.

Guerrero-Anderson on Leadership: MCCR’s second roundtable on Leadership and Values on June 9 featured Milestone Growth Fund CEO Esperanza Guerrero-Anderson. Thirty-six members and friends of MCCR heard Ms. Guerrero-Anderson talk about her values as a leader and her struggle to align values across all dimensions of her work, family and spiritual life. Her focus on core values drives her leadership of Milestone. Ms. Guerrero- Anderson is a member of MCCR’s Board of Directors. Next up in the series is Dr. Reatha Clark King, leader of the General Mills Foundation, will speak on August 12. Call 651/962-4120 for information.

Assessing Global Readiness: Minneapolis attorney, author and consultant, Dr. Larry Koslow, delivered a half-day workshop on June 5 for MCCR to assist companies that plan to enter the global marketplace. Koslow, who chairs the international business law group at Fredrikson & Byron, is author of Business Abroad: Ten Proven Methods For Building A Global Business. Koslow incorporated discussion of ethics issues that might arise and his framework to help businesses assess their readiness for international business.

Seitel’s Work & Family Newsbrief Expanded: Susan Seitel, publisher of the nation’s best work/life newsletter, a member of The Work« Life NetworkÔ steering committee, and a valued partner for MCCR, has added a "Manager’s Quarterly" to her portfolio. It is a digest of the most critical work/life news for managers and supervisors. An employee’s ability to manage work/life balance is dependent, in large part, on the attitudes and behavior of his or her manager. Contact Susan at 612/936-7898 or via her WEBsite at www.workfamily.com.

U.N. Secretary-General’s Speech Published: MCCR has published the text of the May 18 speech to Minnesota business leaders by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. For printed copies call MCCR at 651/962-4120 or find it on MCCR’s website.

Area Code Switch In Effect: MCCR has a new area code (651) as of July 10. Although the Center’s offices are in Minneapolis, the University of St. Thomas exchange, which we share, is in the new area code. For calls or faxes to MCCR, please use area code 651.

Caux Round Table in Japan: An interview with Win Wallin, CRT Chair and Chairman Emeritus of Medtronic, and Dominic Tarantino, Chairman of Price Waterhouse World Firm, appeared in the prestigous Japan Times March 16. Wallin and Tarantino led a CRT delegation meeting with Japanese colleagues, and Tarantino spoke on "The Global Business Community At A Crossroads" to the Keidanren subcommittee on The Charter for Good Corporate Behavior. A number of key Japanese business leaders assisted in founding the Caux Round Table. You may remember that Tarantino spoke at MCCR’s 1997 Annual Meeting.

Pioneer Press on the Caux Round Table: The June 21 Saint Paul Pioneer Press carried a column by Dave Beal on the Caux Round Table which is chaired by Chairman Emeritus of Medtronic Win Wallin. While the article noted MCCR’s assistance to the Round Table, it overlooked the tremendous effort by Mike Olsen, the U.S. Coordinator for the Caux Round Table, and his assistant Lorri Kopischke. Mike, who is based in the Twin Cities, plays a critical organizing role for the North American region of the CRT and works closely with coordinators in Japan and Europe. To reach Mike Olsen for information, call 612/924-9234.

Medtronic’s Ethics Program Featured: Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry, in its May 1998 edition, published an interview featuring Bruce Johnson, assistant general counsel of Medtronic, speaking on the key elements of Medtronic’s ethics program. Johnson, who spoke at an MCCR workshop last fall, cited three critical success factors: one -- company-wide understanding that the program is supported by top management; two -- taking infractions seriously; and three -- a way for employees to check out what are often ambiguous issues before they act. You can find the text at: www.devicelink.com/mddi.

Advertising on Higher Ground: On July 15 Kevin Lynch, founder and CEO of Lynch Jarvis Jones, speaks on ethics and advertising and the sometimes toxic impact of ads on children and society. More in our next Report to Members and Friends.
