Report to Members & Friends

July 1996

  1. VICE PRESIDENT GORE'S CONFERENCE: Nine MCCR Work and Family Task Force members traveled to Nashville June 23-24 for the Vice President's Family Reunion V: Work and Family Conference. The Task Force helped conference planner Marti Erickson, director of the Consortium on Children, Youth and Families at the University of Minnesota, recruit a strong Minnesota business delegation. Vice President Gore moderated an "Experts Forum" with a select group of 100 participants including our Task Force. The next day, President Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the Vice President addressed the 1200 conferees in Nashville and groups at 138 satellite sites nationwide.

For a full report on the Nashville conference, attend a July 24 Lunch Meeting hosted by American Express Financial Advisors. Call MCCR for details.

  2. WORK/FAMILY CONFERENCE DRAWS 100-PLUS: The Center's June 12 conference, Creating High Performance Organizations: A Work/Family Perspective, attracted 120 business, nonprofit and government representatives. Work Family expert Brad Googins stressed the need for linking community-based and company-based strategies for balancing work/life issues. Discussions identified challenges for business in developing effective Work/Life practices. Small businesses panelists demonstrated forcefully that Work/Life offers business benefits for all companies.

Thanks to Ceridian, Honeywell, EAR, Minnegasco, Piper Jaffray, American Express Financial Advisors, Medtronic, and Allianz Life Insurance for their support.

  3. REDEFINING DIVERSITY: 109 MCCR Members and guests crowded into the UST dining room to hear Dr. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. outline his ideas and strategies for Redefining Diversity. His new book takes our understanding of diversity way beyond affirmative action and gives practical guidance on recognizing diversity situations, deciding when action is required, and choosing appropriate strategies.

  4. FAMILIES THAT WORK!: This MCCR project delivered 16 customized work-site family education programs to employees at seven member companies during the last year. Project director Patty Schneider just completed two sessions for 180 Norwest Bank co-workers on diversity awareness. Patty is developing a new Fall program on challenges facing the "Sandwich Generation" at the request of TSI, Inc. To learn how the project can serve your workforce contact Patty at 962-4120.

  5. KUTTNER SPEAKS: Robert Kuttner, Business Week columnist and founder of the Economic Policy Institute, addressed 190 guests from member companies gathered for MCCR's May 21 Annual Meeting. He challenged companies to consider "whether in this competitive environment, business is really capable of delivering on [its corporate responsibility] principles." "It's tempting," he said, "for corporate leaders and others who have social objectives to treat the corporation as if it were a kind of private welfare state. The risk is that both business and its critics will take this rhetoric seriously and try to do things that business in the end may not be capable of fulfilling."

  6. DIRECTORS ELECTED: New members to MCCR's Board are: Paul Baszucki (Norstan), Tim Flynn (KMPG Peat Marwick), Phil Heasley (First Bank System), and Clint Larson (Honeywell).

  7. EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE: Chaired by Clint Larson, this action-oriented committee's first priority is determining how to better serve our members. Presently, the Committee is identifying key strategic, implementation and program issues. We need input and suggestions from members; please call Clint!

  8. MACGREGOR IN EGYPT: MCCR President Bob MacGregor is in Alexandria, Egypt for June and July on a volunteer project for the International Executive Service Corps. In June, Bob spoke at the U.N. Habitat Summit in Istanbul, Turkey and at a Copenhagen conference on Africa. He'll be in Caux, Switzerland for the July Caux Round Table meeting on the "Role of Corporations in Global Society" and Work/Family issues. Medtronic's Win Wallin chairs CRT this year.

  9. ALIGNING VALUES PROGRAM SET: Facilitators Carol Pine and Chuck Kingsley are putting the final touches on a series of Roundtable Discussions of how values are applied and systems aligned in organizations: Identifying Core Values (August 22), Experiencing Values Alignment (September 26), Achieving Shared Meaning (October 24), and Core Values in Action (November 21).
