Work/Life Strategies for Employers

  • The Work«Life NetworkSM, which expanded by 25%, executed productive meetings:

  • Ellen Galinsky of the Families and Work Institute in New York spoke on the changing workforce, organized in cooperation with Resources for Child Caring (September).

  • Judy David, director of One Small Step in San Francisco, one of the leading work/life networks in the country, discussed research on work/life practices. Funded by American Express Financial Advisors (January).

  • Linda Duxbury, Carleton University in Ottawa, one of the top work/life researchers in North America, provided an overview of research on supportive management as a key to creating healthy and productive work environments. Funded by Ceridian (April).

  • Presented workshop on work/life strategies at HealthPartners’ SMART conference on early childhood development (October). MCCR assisted in planning and marketing the event.

  • Participated in a discussion at Medtronic on work/life as a global issue (May).

  • Participated in Ceridian Performance Partners’ workshop on the Changing Workforce featuring Ellen Galinsky of Families and Work Institute (June).

  • Convened executive group to explore potential company support for new Work/Life Research (April).

  • Participated in Hennepin County Community Health Department’s breakfast seminar focused on Work/Life strategies (March) and provided information about MCCR report and services.

  • Presented work/life workshop to over 80 conferees at the UST MultiCultural Forum (March).

  • MCCR’s Families That Work!SM program assisted TSI, Inc. throughout the year: arranged company volunteers for the Mounds View School District; aided TSI in sponsoring an Art Fair and a Science Fair for schools; provided family education workshops; and aided TSI in creating a product development and marketing competition for Irondale High School students.

  • Served on United Way’s Steps To Success steering committee to promote work/life strategies among small businesses.

  • Started serving a three-year term on the Advisory Council for the University of Minnesota’s Consortium on Children, Youth and Families (CYFC).

 

Business Ethics Management

  • Launched a Business Ethics Management series featuring top practitioners: Honeywell - October; Medtronic - November; Coopers & Lybrand - December; and The Fulcrum Group - May.

  • Developed Ethics and Integrity ServiceSM to assist companies in developing codes of conduct and effective ethics management strategies.

  • Collaborated with the University of Minnesota researchers to develop a research proposal for the National Science Foundation to study the links between quality and ethics.

  • Participated in an International Business Ethics seminar at Fredrikson & Byron - March.

  • MCCR was included in a continuing legal education workshop with segments on business ethics.

 

Values and Leadership in Organizations

  • MCCR’s roundtable discussion series, Aligning Values and Actions, facilitated by consultants Carol Pine and Chuck Kingsley, featured Minnesota business executives: Tony Andersen, Chairman of H. B. Fuller (April) and Esperanza Guerrero-Anderson, CEO of Milestone Growth Fund (June). Two additional speakers are scheduled: Dr. Reatha Clark King of General Mills (August ‘98) and Larry Perlman of Ceridian (October ‘98).

 

Global Business Ethics

  • UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan addressed Minnesota business leaders in a meeting organized by MCCR, the Minnesota Business Partnership and the Caux Round Table.

  • Assessing Global Readiness seminar, led by Dr. Larry Koslow of Fredrikson & Byron, helped participating companies prepare to enter global markets.

  • Promoted principled business leadership and the Principles for Business during past four years in Beirut, Lebanon; Johannesburg, South Africa; Stockholm, Sweden; Istanbul, Turkey; Basel, Switzerland; Mexico City and Monterey, Mexico; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Tokyo, Japan; Hong Kong and Beijing, China.

  • Spoke at Youth Conferences for AIESEC over last four years in Basel, Switzerland and in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and for students and faculty at the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon.

  • Spoke and chaired major conference sessions at a global conference on Sustainable City Development and the Role of Corporations in Bremen, Germany and for the United Nations in New York on the same subject.

  • Spoke to the Third International Conference on Spirituality and Business on Corporate Values in a Changing World: A World Standard of Ethical Business in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

  • Participated in conferences for the United Nation’s Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) in Istanbul, Turkey, and in Nairobi, Kenya during last several years.

 

Topical Speakers and Issues

  • Luncheon presentation by author and consultant Jeff Gates speaking on The Ownership Solution and the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) concept as a solution to the problems confronting capitalism (April).

  • Co-sponsored University of St. Thomas Stakeholder Dialogue featuring poet David Whyte, Mary Ann Donahue of Medtronic, and Dr. Peter Vaill, UST (April). The Dialogue is an annual event sponsored by the Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics at St. Thomas.

  • Partnered with BSR on a major regional speech on Sustainable Development featuring a world-recognized, William McDonough, dean of the school of architecture at the University of Virginia.

 

CHARACTER COUNTS!SM

  • Facilitated a work/life workshop for youth and employers at the Minnesota Alliance with Youth Summit which featured VP Al Gore and retired general Colin Powell and hosted a CHARACTER COUNTS!SM information booth.

  • Provided information and assistance to Megan West, Miss Minnesota 1998, who is a CHARACTER COUNTS!SM trainer and speaker on character education statewide.

 

Strategic Initiatives

  • Launched planning for a joint initiative between MCCR, the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, and the Graduate School of Business at the University of St. Thomas.

  • Initiated discussion of long-term cooperative programming with Upper Midwest Business for Social Responsibility Chapter. Partnered with Upper Midwest BSR Chapter in executing Landmark Center speech on Sustainable Development. Pursued discussion with national offices of BSR on ways to cooperate.

  • Commenced discussion of organizing a Student Chapter focused on business ethics/corporate responsibility.

  • Initiated conversation on potential cooperation with Center on Corporate Community Relations at Boston College (also home to nationally-recognized Center on Work and Family).

  • People As a Competitive Advantage - Pat Donovan, Norwest Twin Cities Banking.

  • Published three Reports to Members and Friends providing updates on MCCR programs and activities to keep members informed about the Center.

  • Authored an article on work/life for the Minnesota School Board Association journal.

  • Authored "Solid Ethics Yields A Solid Bottom Line" for Masterpieces (UST publication).

  • Authored "Principled Business Leadership for a Global Economy" published in the Star Tribune.

  • Upgraded and expanded information available on MCCR WEB site [ www.stthomas.edu/mccr ].

  • Managed Web site for the Caux Round Table [www.cauxroundtable.org].

 

Related Program Activity

  • Developed a graduate level MCCR-UST Study Abroad tour, Doing Business in Western Europe: Business, Culture and Ethics, scheduled for January 1999, including contacts with potential company partners (3M, Cargill, St. Paul Companies, Honeywell, Medtronic).

  • Provided input on corporate philanthropy to the Advisory Committee of the Minnesota Keystone Program (March).

  • Participated in UST Labor-Management Relations in a World of Change (February).

  • Co-sponsored and assisted on logistics for UST MultiCultural Forum (March).

  • Harrison Owen discussed his innovative Open Space Technology for the Corporate Level at Caring for the Soul at Work Conference co-sponsored with the College of St. Catherine (November).

  • Co-Sponsored Responsibilities of a Global Organization: The Challenge of World Hunger with the University of St. Thomas which featured Jean-Loup Dherse, Vice-President (energy and industry) of the World Bank, Deputy Chairman of the Caux Round Table (April).

  • Humphrey Institute and MCCR co-sponsored Estrangement of Engagement: Local Responses to Global Challenges. (February).

  • Leadership from Inside Out Series co-sponsored with the Heartland Institute and Aveda (May).
